Decade of Solidarity project is probably the most inspiring and the most unique challenge that the GU Polish Society has decided to undertake in the first trimester of the 2009/2010 academic year. The project is officially coordinated by Kuba Hiterski, Michał Stawowy and Deni Mladenova.
There is a really strong motivation and an interesting story standing behind the project. The 20th anniversary of the fall of communism in Poland and the 20 years of Polish sovereign government have been celebrated in the country and in Polish communities across the world in various ways, including most recent celebrations in Kraków.
Among many events, a civic initiative Razem '89 (Together '89) has been collectively undertaken by numerous Polish NGOs including Fundacja Batorego, Fundacja Osrodka Karta and Centrum Edukacji Obywatelskiej in order to evoke civic spirit among the Poles and encourage people to actively participate in this celebration. Eventually, the wave of enthusiasm has hit many, inter alias, the Polish Societies in the UK, during this year's congress in London. It was there that students have decided that all active Polish Societies (currently 22) will work together on '1979-1989. The Decade of Solidarity'. Crucially, the Project is sponsored by the Polish Embassy in London and supported by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Polish Consulate in Edinburgh, Fundacja Osrodka Karta and the Polish Cultural Institute in the UK. The exhibition's opening will take place on Sunday, 25th of October in the Glasgow University Memorial Chapel. During the event we are planning an opening speech by Martin Stepek with a panel discussion, mini-concert of Mira Opalinska International Quartet followed by piano recital by Mr Aleksander Kudajczyk. The exhibition will further available in the atrium of Wolfson Medical School building from Monday 26th to Friday 30th of October. Hope to see you all there!
