Next Year Glasgow University Polish Society will proudly host the biggest initiative aimed at Eastern European Students in the UK. This is an amazing chance and a challenge for our society and the biggest project that our society wishes to realize.
The Congress of Polish Societies is basically an occasion for all Polish Societies in the UK to meet up and discuss the situation of both Polish as well as International Societies in the UK, an occasion for students to take part in many workshops and listen to stunning lectures by world class professors, businessmen and diplomats. The event is free of a charge and highly funded by Polish Government. The key speakers from the previous years were: Professor Norman Davies (Oxford University), Professor Zbigniew Pelczynski (Oxford University), Radoslaw Sikorski (Minister of the Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland) and many more.
This year Congress will last three days and apart from great speakers it will also include a sightseeing tour, workshops as well as Pianist Concert commemorating 200th Anniversary of Chopin’s Birthday. There will be plenty of opportunities for exchanging ideas, networking and getting involved. The main theme of next year’s Congress will be the issue of the adequate representation of the interests of Overseas Students in their home countries. It will mostly be based on the example of Polish Students in the UK, nevertheless it will be extrapolated on the whole international student population by the contribution of Glasgow University International Society. We are hoping to define a starting point for Polish Societies to unite and represent the interests of Polish Students adequately. On top of that we also hope that through the contribution of media that will be involved in the congress we will also point the Polish Government some of the unresolved issues that are discriminating against Polish Students in the UK (e.g. inadequate funding in comparison to home students, lack of student discounts in home country etc). Those issues are common to International Students from many countries and we hope that, basing on the Polish case, we will be able to point to a bigger problem and reach feasible and efficient solutions.
Nevertheless, the congress itself will not only be concerned with serious issues. There will be also great opportunities to socialize and relax. There will be an impressive ‘break the ice’ party will loads of drink promos as well as amazing pianist performance at the end of the Congress. Besides there will also be a great fully funded sightseeing tour to Edinburgh/Stirling. Last but not least, there will be plenty of quality free food and beverages for all participants. That’s roughly the idea of next year congress. We hope that it will be a great success and that it will define a new long-lasting standard for future Congresses.
Nevertheless, as with all big events, there will be plenty of work involved and thus loads of opportunities to get involved and enrich your CV! Below, you will find additional details on the event.
