Second Language First Aid
Wanna use your experience and language skills to help Polish emigrants and their children? Fancy meeting like-minded people and working in a team? If the answer is yes then this project is definitely for you. As you all know Poles invaded the UK in recent years. Here they have been facing certain problems which are related to the fact that most of them don’t speak fluent English and that they lack knowledge about and awareness of public services in Scotland. You will have an opportunity to help them in three ways. First, you can help adult Polish emigrants in contacts with Citizens Advice Bureau, translating and writing official letters, directing them to charity organizations supporting people suffering from disabilities, addictions and violence. Second, you will help Polish children with learning English, studying other high-school subjects and problems related to adjustment in the new environment. Thirdly, you can help with running entertaining Polish language and history lessons for kids whose parents are concerned that their children forget Polish roots because they have adjusted in Scotland too well! Whichever option suits you best contact us to make a difference! More information on the Glasgow University SRC website.
